Brett Sparrow was born and raised within the Musqueam community. Through his family’s cultural leadership, including the artistic storytelling of his grandmother Susan Point’s family and his mother Dawn Campbell-Sparrow’s family teachings and values from our longhouse, Brett is committed to finding his own path toward Musqueam leadership.
In 2019, Brett graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BA in economics, minoring in commerce at UBC’s Sauder School of Business. During his undergraduate studies, Brett interned with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) where he volunteered with RBC’s Royal Eagles, an Employee Resource Group dedicated to Indigenous community engagement, and served as an RBC Student Ambassador in 2018.
Brett briefly worked as a golf coach at Golf Progress Hub, a competitive youth golf program located at Musqueam Golf and Learning Academy. He then moved to the Okanagan to become the first Indigenous liaison for the BC Sheriff’s Service (BCSS) with the Ministry of the Attorney General. There, Brett develop a framework for Indigenous community engagement that secured funding for BCSS’s brand-new Indigenous engagement department. The department projected secure funds until 2022, well beyond his departure from the organization.
Brett returned to Musqueam in September 2020 to begin a master’s degree at UBC’s School of Community and Regional Planning, and he is the first Musqueam member to be admitted to the school’s Indigenous Community Planning (ICP) Program. Due to Musqueam’s internationally-recognized comprehensive community plan, our community has been a key partner and facilitator of the ICP program since its launching in 2012. Brett was elected into Musqueam council December 2020 and is anticipated to graduate in 2022.
